Strong leadership helps varsity girls face tough competition.

Head coach Christine Thornton elected Emily Box (forward), Ellie Kain-Kuzniewski (forward), KaBria Ross (defense/defensive mid), and Sierra Clark (defense), as this year’s captains, and so far, they have played Grassfield 2-1, Tallwood 3-0, Cox  1-1, Kellam and Princess Anne 3-2.

“We graduated 11 seniors last year, so getting to Regionals is a lofty goal that these captains are determined to achieve,” said Thornton.

One of the senior captains is optimistic.

“So far, the team has been working together well, and we have learned how to better play with each other. Our level of the play has already improved significantly since the beginning of the season, and so many players have grown tremendously,” said Kain-Kuzniewski.

The most recent pod game against Princess Anne is an example of this.

“We were down 0-2 at half time, and in the last six minutes of the second half, one of our captains, Sierra Clark, scored, followed by a goal by captain Ellie Kain-Kuzniewski at four minutes left, tying up the game. We finished off the game with a third goal by KaBria Ross, also a captain, who scored in the last four minutes of overtime,” said Khadija Sissoko, a freshman on the team.

“Our record is 3-3-2 after yesterday’s game,” said Thornton.
