Boys volleyball effectively ended their regular season with a record of 19-5 and second in the Beach district.
“Winning felt amazing, but personally, I felt like we could have done better and capitalized on the important games that we should have won,” said junior Layne Kemp.
Starting the season off, the Dolphins successfully won their first six games, winning all three sets in each game with the opposing teams never putting more than one set on them. Additionally, they beat the current No.1 team in the Beach district, Kempsville High School, 3-0.
“Winning the first six games was nice, it gave us confidence coming out as one of the top teams in the area and gave us motivation to keep working hard,” said senior Vincent Yi.
Throughout the season, the team has gone through thick and thin, beneficially winning games and then experiencing tough losses.
“After the losses, we all had to come together to work towards bettering each other. Instead of playing selfishly, we understood that our success is dependent on the performance of everybody working together on the court,” said senior Daved Holloway.
The team has spent countless hours in practice going over plays and working on techniques to improve their skill set; in addition to having games twice a week.
Throughout the season, the boys have persevered even through the few losses they’ve endured.
“Compared to other teams I’ve been a part of, this team is the most determined and dominant. Everybody lifts each other up and gives 110% every time they step on the court at practice and in games,” said Holloway.
The Dolphins will take on the Great Bridge Wildcats on Oct. 30 at Ocean Lakes High School for the regional quarter-finals.
“I think this game will be pretty straightforward, we’ve beaten Great Bridge before and we’ve only gotten better since then, so I have confidence we’ll pull through,” said Vincent.
