With three seconds left in overtime of Super Bowl 58, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes, hikes the ball three yards away from the San Francisco 49ers’ endzone. He rolls to the right and spots a wide-open Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman, in the endzone. He throws the football to Hardman as the ref blows their whistle, signifying a touchdown. The stands erupt as the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls.
The last team to win back-to-back Super Bowls was the New England Patriots 19 years ago in 2004 and 2005.
“And, with a third title in five seasons, it makes the Chiefs the first post-Pats dynasty,” said NFL senior national columnist Judy Baptista.
Twenty-eight-year-old Mahomes was drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, he did not see the field as a starter until 2018 when the existing QB Alex Smith, was traded to the Washington Redskins, now called the “Commanders”.
Since Mahomes started as a QB, he has led the Chiefs to six straight American Football Conference (AFC) Championships and won four. The team lost to the Patriots in the 2018 AFC Championship game and the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022.
“They have some of the best players at every position, which has led them to the AFC Championship for six straight seasons,” said freshman Zak Kain-Kuzniewski. “They have done what only other teams could imagine, and the teams that have done this have always been considered a dynasty.”
Mahomes has received Super Bowl (MVP) for all three wins and NFL MVP twice. He also has a 15-3 record in the NFL playoffs, the second-best playoff win percentage in NFL history behind Green Bay Packers QB Bart Starr.
Another notable piece in the team’s success is head coach Andy Reid, whose 284 combined wins in the postseason and the regular season with the Chiefs and the Packers is the fourth most by a head coach in NFL history.
As Kansas City looks towards the future, they aim to be the first NFL team ever to win three straight Super Bowls.
“I’ll do whatever I can to be back in this game next year and try to go for that three-peat (Three Super Bowl wins in a row),” said Mahomes in an interview with the NFL. “It’s an ongoing thing in the NFL. Once you win that championship, you have those parades and you get those rings, and then you’re not the champ anymore.”
