After an undefeated season, gymnastics won the VHSL Class 5 State Championship on Feb. 16, 2024.
They competed against Kellam, Douglass Freeman, Woodgrove and Stonebridge High School, and came out on top with a score of 145.675. The Dolphins previously won the Class 6 State Championship in 2022, and finished second in 2021 and 2019.
In the individual competition, senior Julia Lee placed first on bars with a score of 9.700 and third on floor with a score of 9.675. Junior Katie Wilkinson placed seventh on floor with a score of 9.500.
“We worked so hard all season and winning was so rewarding. After long practices, staying late on meet days and practicing over breaks, it was such a good feeling to hear our names called as state champions,” said sophomore Charley Snellinger. “The team performed very well at the meet, some of our highest scores of the season. It was intimidating going against some really good schools, but it felt really good to come out on top.”
The gymnastics team will be recognized during the Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ School Board meeting on March 12, 2024, for their accomplishments.
