“A Minecraft Movie” had its official teaser trailer released early in September of this year, and received plenty of initial criticism.
Based on the popular video game “Minecraft,” the film will follow a star-studded cast featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers and more. Despite this, the release of the teaser has stirred up heated controversy, even from long-time fans of the original game.
“I absolutely disliked it,” senior and long-time fan Ethan Smith said. “I do not like that the characters are real people and not animated, and Jack Black looks and acts nothing like his character [Steve].”
Other than the live-action characters existing in the usual pixelated and blocky world of “Minecraft,” the teaser also featured several realistic computer-generated imagery (CGI) creations such as the iconic cube shaped sheep which was heavily mocked on social media.
“People are making too big of a deal about the CGI online, but it could have been done a bit better to match the game’s look,” freshman Victor Tang said.
The movie follows four humans brought into the world of “Minecraft” through a dimensional portal. In order to return to their home world, the humans will have to master their creative skills and fight an evil force of enemies from the video game, such as Zombies, Piglins (bipedal pig creatures) and the main antagonist of the film, the Ender Dragon. To help the four human protagonists, a master crafter named Steve will help guide them through the world of “Minecraft.”
“The plot is a little basic,” Victor said. “I wish they put a bit more of a spin on it.”
Despite upfront problems with the film, many claim they will still make the trip to see the film in theaters.
“Even if they don’t make any changes to it, I will still watch and see how bad it is,” senior Owen Leigh said.
On its current trajectory, the film comes out in theaters on April 4, 2025.
“I played the game as a kid, so I am interested in seeing it, then I will make up my mind about it. It looks like it could be a quick cash grab, unfortunately,” Victor said.
