Heart racing. Breathing heavy. Cheers from hundreds of voices. Junior Frederika “Freddy” Bartsch finds herself competing in America for the first time.
“I thought it sounded interesting and exciting to really get to know a new culture by not just traveling there, but living in it,” Freddy said. “A bonus is definitely [improving] your English and [meeting] new people, with the chance [of making] friends for life.”
Upon arriving in America, Freddy showcased a strong athletic background stemming from her experience competing in triathlons for the past five years, making her an immediate standout on the Ocean Lakes cross country team (OLXC).
“Not only has she comfortably settled in as part of OLXC, but she is already up to a similar level of training as our most experienced runners,” senior Lauren Rakov said. “We expect her to be a strong force on varsity.”
The hardest thing was saying goodbye to all of her family and friends in Germany; however, she has been able to adjust with the help of new friends within the cross country team, according to Freddy.
“What made everything easier for me here was having a great host family. I was really lucky that I made friends straight away thanks to a few of the girls from cross country,” Freddy said.
Although her family is further away, they emerged as Freddy´s biggest supporters by cheering her on and encouraging her to push through any hardships.
“Their support means an incredible amount to me, and that motivates me to make them proud through my performance in sports and academic[s],” Freddy said.
Other than family and friends, her coach shows strong support.
“I have been impressed with her English, competitiveness and kindness,” cross country coach Michael Nestor said.”I am super glad I met her, and I am eager to help her become the best runner and leader she can be.”
She wants to improve her 5K personal record while having a great time with everyone, according to Freddy.
“Sometimes you just have to challenge yourself a little to achieve your goals,¨Freddy said. ¨Just don’t give up.¨
