The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center recently lost a well-loved resident, Monty the harbor seal.
On Sept. 30, 2024, 4-year-old resident Monty passed away unexpectedly during a diagnostic exam.
“I have been volunteering at the aquarium for five years now. Monty was usually the one at the front of the exhibit greeting everyone, playfully following kids around and showing off some underwater acrobatics,” senior Caylin Szilagyi said.
Monty was a resident at the Virginia Aquarium since June 2021, and lived with three other seals, Rudder, Hector and Javier.
Monty was being seen for X-rays and an ultrasound when he passed away, according to the Virginia Aquarium. The seal was admired by aquarium staff and was always engaging guests as they arrived.
“The Virginia Aquarium appreciates the community’s thoughts and support during this difficult time. Monty was well-loved by staff and was an incredible animal ambassador,” a news release from the Virginia Aquarium stated.
Monty came to the aquarium after being rehabilitated three times by the National Marine Life Center in Massachusetts, before being deemed as non-releasable.
“I feel shocked about Monty’s loss and my heart goes out to his caretakers and everyone grieving,” Caylin said.
