Leading up to the homecoming football game, students embraced their school spirit with a flurry of unique outfits.
This year’s spirit week began on Oct. 18, 2024, and continued through the day of the Homecoming Spirit Assembly on Oct. 25, 2024.
The spirit days had varied themes, which led to creative outfits from both students and staff. First, was Disney Day, where people wore their favorite Disney attire or character costumes. On Monday, the halls were filled with math shirts and sports jerseys for Mathletes vs. Athletes Day. Grandparents walked alongside babies and young kids on Cradles vs. Canes Day. Wednesday brought great competition between the ultra-prepared “soccer moms” and spatula-wielding “barbecue dads.” The theme drastically switched the next day to a country vs. country club atmosphere. Finally, “color wars” between the grade levels ended it all off on Friday.
“My favorite spirit day was probably the Country vs. Country Club Day because it was a simple theme,” sophomore Bennett Von St. Paul said.
The two-hour Homecoming Spirit Assembly on Friday had multiple events planned, ranging from performances by the band, color guard and chorus to interactive games like musical chairs. The Homecoming Court representatives from each grade were formally recognized, and soon after, the traditional “I Am Somebody” chant echoed throughout the gym.
“To me, spirit week and, by extension, the assembly are important because they are some of the few times that students really get to come together as a school,” junior Ami Badiye said. “I don’t really register just how many people go to OLHS until I see all the bleachers in the gym filled up with everyone screaming ‘I am a Dolphin’. Then, it hits me that this community is significant to me.”
Bennett agrees with this fact.
“Spirit weeks let anyone feel like a real Dolphin,” he said.
