After the previous club fizzled out, junior Alen Abhilash decided to take up the mantle and reawaken the Table Tennis Club.
“I decided to create this club because I have a lot of fun playing table tennis in the gym,” Alen said. “During lunch on Wednesdays, I would always try to play table tennis in the gym. I hated that it was one of the only times I could play table tennis at school.”
The meetings are held every two weeks, but that may change to every week depending on the reception of the club.
“The first meeting will be held either in the cafeteria or the cafeteria foyer,” Alen said. “All of the tennis tables and supplies will be moved there before the meeting starts which is why we decided to start the meeting at 2:20 p.m. after school instead of 2 p.m. It costed about $100 to buy all the equipment.”
The officers will buy the equipment and have a minimum of four tables, and another based on the number of people the club will need to accommodate.
“For now our board is just me as vice president, Alen as our president and Austin Stegerwald as our media manager,” junior Zachery Ennis said. “Our sponsor is Mr. [Jakob] Saunders.”
Saunders, the AP European History teacher, used to play table tennis when he was in high school and college with his friends.
“As a new father, I was not necessarily looking to sponsor a new club, but I have very motivated club leaders who showed a lot of initiative and took responsibility to create and organize the club,” Saunders said. “I was happy to help them pursue their interests.”
Table tennis club also serves as a place for people to socialize.
“I like playing ping pong, so the club is a nice time for me to do something I like and spend time with friends,” junior Clark Smith said.
Membership in the club is open to all students interested in table tennis.
“We have been telling many people in person to join the club and attend our first meeting,” Alen said. “It is one of the easiest ways to spread the word.”
