Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has modified its late arrival check-in policy in response to the safety scare at Kempsville High School.
Students who arrive past 7:20 a.m. must verify their identity with school security before they are able to attend their classes, which has sparked mixed reactions among the community.
On Oct. 22, 2024, four teenagers at Kempsville High School were arrested by the Virginia Beach Police Department after they entered the school and allegedly assaulted a student, according to 13News Now.
However, the four students who had allegedly assaulted the student did not attend Kempsville High School.
A spokesperson with VBCPS said the teenagers walked into Kempsville High School with book bags and looked to be the same age as the other students, according to Harrison.
Students must now verify their identity at the security desk with an identification card through StudentVue or Synergy identification number.
”Parents like it because it adds an additional layer of security for outsiders in gaining access to the school,” assistant principal Dr. Carrie Gantt said.
Students have begun to understand the purpose of the new system.
“While the check-in policy can be annoying and tedious, I understand why we do it and how it protects us,” senior Shawn Madsen said.
