On Jan. 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, beginning his second, non-consecutive term.
The ceremony took place at the United States Capitol Rotunda, where Vice President J.D. Vance was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts administering the presidential oath to Trump.
“I, Donald John Trump, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God,” Trump said.
Since 1981, the inauguration ceremony has been held outdoors on the Capitol’s west front. However, Trump’s second inauguration was moved indoors due to harsh weather conditions, a rare decision last made during President Ronald Reagan’s in 1985.
“In general, I believe that indoor ceremonies should be avoided as it limits the number of average Americans who can witness history firsthand,” history teacher Lisa Gibson said. “The peaceful handover of power demonstrates that our political system is stronger than any individual or party.”
During his 31-minute inaugural address, Trump highlighted his goals and promises for his upcoming presidency.
“The golden age begins right now,” Trump said.
He announced his plans to declare a national emergency at the southern border and initiate mass deportations, vowed to make America affordable and energy dominant, impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada and his plans to reform the healthcare and education systems. In addition, Trump wishes to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” and restore the name of Mount McKinley.
Most of all, Trump called for unity amongst Americans. He emphasized the importance of working together to achieve greatness and prosperity.
“We will stand bravely. We will live proudly. We will dream boldly. And nothing will stand in our way because we are Americans,” Trump said. “The future is ours, and our golden age has just begun.”
