With a current record of 12-8, girls basketball strives to perform well in the post-season.
The Dolphins currently rank fifth overall in the Beach District, with an in-region record of 7-6, on pace to make the playoffs. In their most recent win, the team defeated Tallwood High School on Jan. 28, 2025, with a final score of 59-13.
“We worked well together under pressure to clinch our win,” junior and captain Samara Williams said.
As long as the team continues their winning ways and does not drop below seventh in the district rankings, they will reach the first round of the playoffs.
On top of that, their biggest highlight of the season was a victory over Kempsville High School. This marks the Dolphins’ first win over Kempsville in seven years, according to MaxPreps.
The girls have been working diligently to pursue personal and team goals.
“I feel like we’ve really improved in our passing and moving the ball around and also communication on and off the court,” senior Madeleine Fisher said. “To succeed in the postseason, we need to keep doing what we’re doing and keep the intensity up.”
After a rough start to the season with a record of 4-2, the Lady Dolphins went on to win four of their next five games, which helped them improve to their current record of 12-8.
“Our recent success has been because of our well-coached offense and our team working well together,” Madeleine said.
Junior and captain Jasmyn Miller has played basketball since she was 8 years old and has been on varsity since her freshman year.
Jasmyn currently leads the entire Beach District with 37 total 3-pointers. She’s also seventh in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 5 Region A with 15.5 points per 32 minutes played. She credits her hard work over the offseason for these totals.
“I worked with my Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) coaches all summer to get to where I am today,” Jasmyn said. “I was very disciplined going to different camps and practicing every day, which shows this season.”
Along with Jasmyn, Samara is another top performer. She leads the district with over 16 rebounds per game and ranks second with 8 total double-doubles. While leading the district in rebounding, Samara is also second overall in the state.
In one of her most impressive outings, Samara accumulated 19 of the team’s 27 rebounds in their 72-34 win against First Colonial on Jan. 24, 2025. Another key contributor to this win was Kennedy Walls, who scored 12 points.
Kennedy ranks second overall in the district with 1.6 blocks per game and is also ranked sixth in VHSL Class 5.
“We’ve done better than past years, and we are in a good spot,” Kennedy said. “We have worked hard to get to where we are.
