Every Friday night, crowds file into the gym to watch the top scorer in the Beach District crush the competition.
Junior Jasmyn Miller averages 13.5 points per game, which puts her among the top 15 in Virginia, according to MaxPreps.com. Most importantly, she’s brought crucial 3-point shooting to the Lady Dolphins basketball team, leading them to an 12-8 record.
“I’ve always loved playing basketball growing up,” Jasmyn said. “My mom put me on a [recreational] team when I was eight, and I have been playing on different teams ever since.”
Jasmyn plays small forward for the Ocean Lakes varsity girls basketball team and is a team captain.
“When we have a hard time during a game and need to get out of our heads, [Jasmyn] helps with it and makes sure we all pull through,” sophomore Kennedy Walls said.
Over the summer, she worked to improve for the upcoming season. As an up-and-coming prospect, she attended the Junior Day Basketball showcase at George Mason University to gain exposure with college coaches, working tirelessly with different skill coaches to perfect her craft.
She has made the most progress with shooting and ball handling, which is reflected in her gameplay, according to Jasmyn. She worked mostly on this when training over the summer, which she believes is the hardest she has ever worked before in basketball.
A goal of Jasmyn’s is to break Kendle Dalrymple’s record of eight 3-pointers made in one game, which she tied vs. Kellam on Jan. 31, 2025.
“I admire her work ethic,” senior and sister Jordyn Miller said. “I genuinely think she is one of the most hardworking people I know.”
She trains seven days a week and helps girls that are in the younger age group for her travel team, Excel Basketball Academy.
She hopes to put herself on the radar for college coaches and continues to put in work with hopes to play even better next season.
“The season is almost over, and my main focus is to keep growing,” Jasmyn said.
