As fresh talent steps up to the plate, the baseball team enters rebuild mode.
“I am looking forward to being great this year,” sophomore Turner Kuhle said.
Focused on developing a new lineup and fine-tuning their skills, the team hopes to prove last year’s region championship is the beginning of a dynasty, according to head coach Pete Zell.
Last year’s 17-7 season ended at the VHSL 5A State Quarter-Final against Maury High School with a final score of 7-6 loss.
“We’re looking to bounce back after last year’s devastating loss,” senior and relief pitcher Rowan Powers said. “We lost a few key pieces, but we are looking to fill those slots with some new and polished guys.”
Zell enforces a strict training regime that keeps the team on track throughout the year, and prepares underclassmen for the spring season.
“We hope to go all the way this time,” Zell said. “Players work on developing individual skills which will ultimately lead to team success.”
The Dolphins pitching staff consists of new arms, including sophomore, right-handed pitcher Daniel Hamilton and junior, left-handed pitcher Luke Ellison. The southpaw led the team through the playoffs with a 2.20 earned run average and a 5-1 record.
“Our pitching is underrated, we’re not going to catch your eye on the radar gun, but we have guys that will go out there and grind for outs,” Powers said.
