A vote passed during the March 4, 2025, city council meeting will cause all school zones within Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) to install speed cameras as early as this summer.
The cameras, which will detect vehicle speeds of 10 mph or greater over the speed limit, may result in drivers facing fines of $100, according to WHRO.
The installation of the cameras is part of an effort to enhance traffic enforcement in school areas, following similar implementations in other Hampton Roads cities such as Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake.
“I believe these enforcement cameras will cause student drivers, including myself, to become more cognizant of their speed and consider the dangers or consequences of speeding in school zones,” junior Rian Sanghavi said. “Minimizing the risks of accidents or injuries involving children and drivers in areas with significant foot traffic like school zones is a net positive.”
