Athletic physicals are required by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for athletes who wish to participate in a sport.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed new policies addressing the Preparticipation Physical Examination to expand and modify the form’s rules.
“I think it would be good for students, I think having the extension of the physical will increase participation in sports,” guidance counselor Danetia Wilkins said.
Athletic physicals require student athletes to attend a check up to ensure that the student is eligible to play in their destined sport. With this new policy, student athletes are eligible to play their sport(s) two months longer than the original 12 and a half month period. However, while the changes are minimal, the form will require revisions before July 1, 2025. The VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) met on April 9, 2025 with the form being finalized and successful.
“It is definitely beneficial; it does not take long to start off and it is a great benefit,” sophomore and baseball player Seinko Augins said.
Since Gov. Youngkin signed this new policy, it will take effect starting July 1, 2025. The policy passed to ensure that students are physically and mentally fit for athletic competition as well as to establish a clear timeline for physical examinations.
“This makes me feel good as a student athlete, that players [are allowed more time] on one physical before they have to go out of their way to get a new one,” junior and football player Taylor Vogel said.
