This spring, students in the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTFT) program will step into classrooms across Virginia Beach to complete their teaching internships.
Fifteen juniors and seniors will intern at elementary, middle and high school classrooms throughout the district. These aspiring educators spend three days each week observing experienced teachers, assisting with classroom activities and even leading some lessons themselves.
“I have learned so much about classroom management just by watching how my mentor teacher transitions between activities and keeps students engaged,” senior Tajyhia Manuel said.
The program, which is supported by the Virginia Department of Education, provides dual enrollment credits and helps students get a jumpstart on their career. Those who complete the program and pursue a teaching degree may be eligible for employment opportunities with Virginia Beach City Public Schools after college.
“I always thought I wanted to teach, but now I am certain,” Tajyhia said. “There is nothing like the moment when you explain something, and you can actually see it click for a student.”
Interviews for the contract were held on May 1, 2025. Seniors Marlie Smith, Thomas Dillard, Alyssa Eagen, Erin Tucholski and junior Samyah Wilson were awarded.
“The interview with LeBlanc and Pohl was both professional and welcoming,” Erin said. “It made everything feel real.”
The interns update a Weebly website each week to showcase what they are learning in the classroom. This platform allows them to reflect on their progress, track growth and plan future lessons.
“Having a VTFT intern sets an excellent example to my students in showing them what service to your community means: the responsibility, compassion and the calling to help others,” Carla Daubenspeck, a mentor and fifth grade teacher at Strawbridge Elementary School, said. “My students also love having a “big kid” around to show off what they know, get some one-on-one attention, and even admire as they observe them in their element.”
