After the most recent school board meeting, Dr. Leslie L. Ittner was made the new Ocean Lakes principal, effective July 1, 2025.
As a graduate from Old Dominion University, Ittner currently holds a doctorate in Education Leadership as well as a Master of Science in Education with a concentration on Secondary Education. In addition, she is an Education Specialist in Education Leadership. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Virginia Tech. Endorsed in Administration and Supervision for PreK-12, Ittner holds the position of principal at Plaza Middle School. Ittner originally came from Plaza Middle School, which is recognized as a blue ribbon school, similarly to Ocean Lakes.
According to band director Kaitlyn Proffitt, one of her main goals next year is to build strong bonds between staff and students early on. She plans to do this by promoting the student voice early on and wants to make all students feel safe and supported at Ocean Lakes.
“She brings a lot of energy and experience to the table, and she seems very student focused. I think her leadership style and dedication to communication will be a great match for our school community,” Proffitt said. “I’m excited to see how she brings fresh ideas and perspective to Ocean Lakes. New leadership often brings new opportunities, and I’m hopeful she will continue to support the programs and traditions that make Ocean Lakes High School special while helping us grow.”
When asked about her thoughts about the new principal for next year, the previous Ocean Lakes principal, Claire LeBlanc, said we are incredibly lucky to have Leslie Ittner as our next principal. She explains that Ittner’s strong connection with the school’s past leadership will allow her to step into her new role with continuity, respect and insight, and her background in leadership, student engagement, teaching and learning is both well-rounded and impressive.
“Her extensive experience in student activities reflects her commitment to the whole student academically, socially and emotionally.” LeBlanc said. “She is smart, thoughtful and approachable. As a mother and spouse of a teacher and coach, Dr. Ittner brings a personal connection to education that enhances her leadership strength”
“I am an advocate for students’ participation in activities, music and athletics in addition to their academics. I love seeing students thrive, [doing things] they love and have worked hard to accomplish,” said Ittner when asked about the fine arts department.
