Wafting a warm, pumpkin spice scent, Jennifer Burch’s classroom welcomes its students with open arms.
“I was a little intimidated by what we had to do [in AP US History] at first, but after receiving help from her, the class became a lot easier than it sounded,” junior Bryan Vonada said.
Coming from Cox High School, Burch has risen up as the latest AP US History teacher and a Student Cooperative Association (SCA) adviser.
“She’s one of those teachers who make me go, ‘Okay, she has it all together,’” social studies teacher Darcy Pohl said.
Being born in Virginia Beach, Burch always knew since she was young that she wanted to pursue a career in education or social work. When she ultimately pursued education, she found much enjoyment in teaching history.
“I definitely loved teaching history the most, but I thought about getting certified in English as well at one point,” Burch said.
Burch’s main motivation to keep showing up to the classroom every day is to help her students understand why and how they got to the world they live in presently.
“I think it’s super important that we all understand the history of the United States and what does unite us versus what divides us,” Burch said.
When it comes to SCA, Burch ultimately showed enthusiasm and wants to aid as much as possible to everyone involved.
“It’s exciting, a little bit overwhelming; however, it’s a great group of kids,” Burch said.
She hopes that this year she can recruit students into the general assembly to make the body stronger and to figure out the process of being an advisor.
“My goal is to figure out [the SCA’s] processes, be as helpful as I could possibly be and be engaged,” Burch said.
To students who may be interested in becoming a teacher, Burch recommends the field and wants to remind students to follow their heart.
“You’re going to ride the storm, but it is a great profession and is very rewarding,” Burch said.
