Juniors and seniors battle for spirit

The upperclassmen outfit competition

During the September recent spirit week, a new competition emerged between the upperclassmen: the Battle of 6’ and 7’, playing on the popular 6-7 internet meme. The battle lasted from Sept. 2 to Sept. 4, 2025, during which students had to vote on the best outfit on Instagram.

“We were actually coming from a volleyball tournament in Richmond with the school,” senior class President Kaydyn Ismail said. “We had just seen this reel about ‘Respecting the Upperclassmen ‘2026-2027,’ so we thought that was really funny. Then, [junior class historian] Kamie Santos goes ‘Oh my goodness! Spirit week is next week, what if we do an Instagram battle?’ In the car we were just bouncing ideas off one another. It was a really beautiful thing because it got a lot of people to interact with our pages and with the class.”

Kamie wants to step up her game as historian, and she felt this was the best way to do so. She knew that little collaboration has occurred before between the two classes, and she knew it was time for change.

“I am looking for more involvement and more unity in our class because I was hoping to bring more non-academy students in or be more inclusive of others,” Kamie said. “I was hoping people would show up to take pictures with their friends, and it would just be a really wholesome moment for everybody to connect and take some time off schoolwork.”

The first day of spirit week was Disney day which class of 2026 won with a ratio of 57% to 43%, using a poll with 152 responses. Following suit was sports day which the class of 2027 won with a 51/49% split and 242 responses on the poll. The final day of the competition was surf vs. turf day which the juniors won with 51% on the poll, with 172 responses.

“I am so excited,” junior class president Stone Wagner said. “The classes have spoken; everyone at Ocean Lakes has spoken, and everyone else has spoken. The class of 2027 is way better than 6’; that is all there is to it.”

Junior class won this competition with a score of 2 to 1.

Currently, talks of a potential future battle exist between the two class presidents; however, nothing has been confirmed yet.

“I loved seeing the camaraderie between the two classes,” Stone said. “Even though we were technically competing against each other, everyone was coming out of their shell; some of those kids went all out with their [outfits].”
