For her senior Capstone project, Alyssa Manuel completed a mentorship with Dermatologist Cyndi Torosky, where she studied dermatology, and more specifically, skin cancer and prevention.
“My insecurities about my skin motivated me to shadow a Dermatologist,” said Alyssa. “I also watched a lot of Dr. Pimple Popper on YouTube.”
Monday through Thursday at the dermatology office consists of skin exams and biopsies. Friday, Alyssa’s favorite day, consists of surgeries, cyst extractions, and botox injections.
“I learned so much from my mentorship,” said Alyssa. “I learned about new skin conditions, improved my social skills, and now have a better understanding of botox and fillers.”
Alyssa emphasized the importance of taking care of skin. Some examples of skin cancers she mentioned were melanoma and basal cells.
“In order to prevent these types of skin cancer, it is important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, avoid tanning, and do a self skin examination every month,” said Alyssa.
