The library media center recently won a VLA display contest themed “Banned Books.” The contest was launched back in September, and many libraries in Virginia participated.

VLA (Virginia Library Association) chose three libraries at the end of the contest to win, and Ocean Lakes’ library won the public school section of the contest.

The “Banned Books” theme contest featured books students are discouraged to read, and it promoted the freedom of reading without censorship.

New librarian Nicole Glaser led the creation of the display and considered it to be a way to introduce herself to Ocean Lakes’ staff and students.

“I just thought it was a good way to introduce myself to the staff and students, and just to be available as a resource and start a conversation about ‘Banned Books’,” said Glaser.
