Marching band rehearses drill at Ocean Lakes High School on Aug. 17, 2022.

When summer band camp ended, it marked the start of show season.

The August two-week long camp consisted of memorization of drill and music for their show ‘Just Breathe,’ an original composition specifically designed for the band that features Give Us This Day by David Maslanka. Each rehearsal day lasted about nine hours. Leadership, which includes section leaders, drum majors or student directors, was expected to arrive early for set-up.

“My legs usually hurt the day after [precamp], but that’s just proof of how hard everyone works to improve our band,” said sophomore Natasha Trepeta.

Pre-camp took place in the first two weeks of August, Tuesdays to Thursdays, from 5 to 9 p.m. Students learned basic marching techniques and started memorization of their show music. Band camp took place in the next two weeks, where students learned the drill in their seven-minute show.

“I’m super excited for this season,” said junior drum major Hannah Gerick. “We’re progressing really well, and we have some great new marchers.”

Band had their first performance on Aug. 26, for the first home game of the football season. The band will continue to perform at home games and competitions, which start September 24.

“Our band has the drive to succeed,” said Natasha, “and knowing the amazing kids in the band, we will.”
