Assembly honors 540 ‘star’ students

Students were recognized for their outstanding achievements by obtaining an academic letter or academic star on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

“To qualify, you must have had a GPA of 3.5 or above each semester/term for three consecutive semesters/term while sustaining a good citizenship record,” said academic awards ceremony chairwoman, Amanda Malbon.

Approximately 540 students gathered in the auditorium to walk the stage and accept their award. Parents were invited to attend.

The ceremony began promptly at 8:30 a.m., and Sarah Burford, OLHS alumni and AP English and composition teacher, was this year’s guest speaker for the award ceremony.

“I felt like I had no business speaking because I was not an academic star in school, so how could I give advice to the academically gifted?” said Sarah Burford. “The only thing I can say is to not get so laser focused on the future that you forget to enjoy the now.”

Concluding the award ceremony, a brief reception took place in the auditorium foyer. Food and drinks were provided to end the celebration of the students’ accomplishments.
