Ocean Lakes High School has many ways to keep the school safe from any harm and incidents.

Whether it’s security guards, teachers or students pitching in for the safety of the school, everyone contributes.

Security guards, in particular, do things such as lock all the doors, monitor the school, run drills and keep the school together as a whole.

Security plays the top role in the safety of the school. They ensure the safety of all staff and students and help prevent any problems from occurring at any moment.

“What I’ve learned from security is that we want to be safe, so I try my hardest,” said security assistant Allen Johnson.

Not only do they do their job of keeping the school safe, but working security also means working under other jobs like administration or having jobs related to a school security guard beforehand.

“Before working security for Ocean Lakes, I worked in the police department, most of us did. I came here to work as a security guard since I retired from the police department. It’s refreshing to come here and work security,” said security assistant David Brechtel.

However, even though there are many pros to being a security guard, there are also a few cons that come with the job.

“My favorite thing about working for security is the hours, and my least favorite thing about working for security is the disrespectful kids,” said security assistant John Borman.

The skills needed to work security are essential: problem-solving, physical abilities and critical thinking. Working as a school security guard is more than just protecting the school, it helps build and maintain relationships with the students and staff.

Although some students may make security guards’ days harder, they still appreciate those that make all the positive differences.

“What I’ve learned from working security is that the kids are genuinely awesome. It’s my favorite part about this job,” said Bretchel.
