Sam shoots a free throw after being fouled by a player from First Colonial High School at First Colonial High School on Feb. 2, 2024.

She plants her feet, angles her arms and shoots the ball. After the loud swoosh, Sam Williams runs back for defense.

Sam plays center for the Ocean Lakes varsity girls basketball team and is also a team captain.

Despite only being a sophomore, Sam averages around 13 points per game and currently leads Virginia with the most rebounds per game: 19. In total, she currently has 400 rebounds and 273 points for this season. Along with ranking top in Virginia Beach, she is also fifth in the nation, according to MaxPreps.com.

“Everyone believes that you can do it, but you need to believe in yourself to be able to do it,” said Sam.

As a center, Sam contributes to the team in many ways. She can perform under pressure and able to block players on the other team.

“Sam is able to bring the team together as well as motivate each and every one of us. She tries her hardest no matter the situation, and I am very proud of the way she can handle pressure as an underclassman,” said senior and team captain Allison Ragudo.

Sam has been playing basketball for five years. Determined to improve her skills, she continuously practices in and out of school.

“On a daily basis, I practice for two hours. I practice outside of school, on my own or with my trainer,” said Sam.

On Jan. 12, 2024, during the team’s game against Tallwood, Sam managed to score 24 points and obtain 21 rebounds.

Later, the team played the Bayside Marlins on Jan. 18. During the third quarter, Sam reached her 500 career rebounds.

“Most players do not receive 500 career rebounds until their senior year,” said junior Madeleine Fisher

Along with playing basketball at Ocean Lakes, Sam is also a part of the Math and Science Academy.

“I enjoy being ahead of most students along with being challenged with my academics,” said Sam.

She continues to showcase her skills for the rest of the season, and with the basketball season closing in, Sam feels accomplished in how she has contributed to the team this season.

“I believe that I have brought a lot of light to the team, I am a natural leader and that shows on and off the court. I think I did well this season, especially with my accomplishments,” said Sam.
