On Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, the step team closed out Founders Week with a memorable performance.
In addition to their show, Team Royalty shared the history and importance of step within black culture. At their presentation, they educated students about the birth of the dance style, calling it a way of expression, particularly considering how it was oppressed many centuries prior. They emphasized that step is for “everybody,” connecting people through rhythmic beats.
They shared an open invitation to join their efforts.
“We want more diversity because it’s not just black culture, it’s all about a celebration of everyone,” said step adviser and counselor Danetia Wilkins. “Step is a rhythm and a beat, and who doesn’t enjoy dancing?”
Their presentation on black culture inspired many students and brought a sense of community.
“What makes us so great is our ability to come together as a unit. It’s a sisterhood,” said Wilkins.
