The Fin Harmonix, an a cappella club, recently made its return at Ocean Lakes after being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“My main goal is to get people who are not typically involved in the music department to show interest and possibly join,” club president Mia Fruit said.
As a member of the choir, Mia was approached by choir director William Boardman to restart Fin Harmonix this school year.
“I thought it sounded fun and like a nice way to stay involved in the school’s music department,” Mia said.
Fin Harmonix tryouts will take place on Nov. 20 and Nov. 22, 2024, for all treble singers who are interested in striking up a new chord with the group.
“Club members may already be fluent music readers, but it is not an absolute requirement,” Boardman said. “We will have auditions to make sure members are capable of matching pitch and singing with accurate intonation.”
While Fin Harmonix will be open to all voices, it will start out as a treble choir, according to Mia.
“We are looking for 12 people, preferably in the treble (upper) vocal range,” Mia said. “Once the club has been established and we are comfortable with our sound as a group, we will reopen an audition space for those who fall within the bass and tenor (lower) vocal range.”
The club held an interest meeting in early November for those interested.
“I could not help but burst with excitement when I saw that an a cappella club exists [at Ocean Lakes],” freshman and choir member Layla Herrera said.
After the first interest meeting, many choir members sparked an interest in joining; however, the club is not limited to just the chorus.
“I simply look forward to meeting people just like me and all come to do what we love: sing,” Layla said.
