Over 30% of United States public high school students took an AP Exam during the 2021-2022 school year, according to the College Board.
One of these exams was the AP Human Geography (AP Human) exam.
In 2019, over 200,000 high school students took the AP Human final exam, according to the Association of American Geographers.
Taught by history teacher, Stasia LaRoche, AP Human is offered as a college credit class and is generally taken by freshmen and sophomores. While taking this class, students may also receive a history credit.
“Some benefits of taking AP Human include understanding other cultures, experiencing a college class and improving note-taking skills,” sophomore June Bennett said.
The main concepts of AP Human are where things are, why they are there, understanding other cultures and the economic eras of development throughout the world, according to June.
“[A student] should take AP Human in order to understand how society has functioned in the past, and to connect ideas from then to the present,” freshman Derick Yoon said. “Aside from the intellectual point of view, taking this class is useful as it is considered one of the easier AP classes, and a good score on the AP test will be extremely beneficial for college resumes.”
The course actively discusses current events regarding how agriculture and geography can apply to current events.
“The kids that choose to take an AP class in high school are super fun to work with,” LaRoche said.
