Indoor track continues their season successfully in Beach District meets.
Team competitors take part in either sprinting, distance or field events. Athletes from each of the three events have contributed to their recent success.
During the second Beach District Meet on Jan. 8, 2025, multiple athletes ranked within the top five of their event. Senior Brody Lewis finished 2/152 in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.62. Additionally, senior Arianna Ozarawa placed 2/33 in shot put, according to MileStat.com.
“People have been getting [personal records] and having fun while doing it which can sometimes be challenging,” freshman Zoey Pham said.
In preparation for their meets, the team practices six times a week. Typical practices take place at First Landing State Park for distance runners, and the Ocean Lakes track for sprinters, according to junior Kierston Haney.
Furthermore, freshman Carmen Johnson finished 1/40 in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:17.79 on Jan. 29, 2025, during the third Beach District Meet. Junior Fredrika Bartsch placed 1/9 in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:36.19, according to MileStat.com.
Many athletes continue to work towards their personal objectives throughout practice.
“I want to break six minutes in the mile, so I think putting in the effort and getting stronger not only physically but mentally will be super beneficial,” Zoey said, who feels as if the team’s overall goal this season is to qualify for regionals and states.
The team will compete in the fourth Beach District Meet on Feb. 5, 2025, at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
“I expect the team to push to their limits; every step is closer to success and greatness,” senior Zayquan Reynolds said. “I am excited to see what the rest of the season holds.”
