Ocean Lakes girls soccer took a tough loss to the defending state champions of Kellam High School, ending in a 2-0 defeat.
This was a highly anticipated matchup, with the Knights being undefeated and the Dolphins maintaining an impressive 7-1 record leading up to the game. Ocean Lakes entered this game with great momentum, coming off a strong 5-0 win against Tallwood and a six-game win streak.
In their most recent meeting in April 2024, the Dolphins suffered a devastating 5-0 loss.
“We [prepared] mentally to make sure we [kept] everybody in good spirits,” senior Madison Moore said.
The Knights came on strong offensively in the first half, scoring their goals in the 26th and 38th minutes.
In the second half, Ocean Lakes’ defense was able to steady the pace of the game. Senior goalkeeper Marlie Smith had 13 saves. In their nine games so far this season, a total of just nine goals have been allowed from opposing teams.
“I think we played well as a team,” Madison said. “We definitely could have improved on building up the field and working together.”
Although the Dolphins were persistent offensively, with seniors Vivian Wolfe and Madison aggressively attacking Kellam’s defense, they were ultimately unable to respond and equalize.
Despite this loss, the Dolphins still have a strong 8-2 record and are ranked third overall in the 757, according to 757teamz.
“When you don’t win, you focus more on the things to improve on for the next opportunity,” head coach Christine Thornton said. “The team will stay positive and focused, so we may have the opportunity to play them again.”
