District Band auditions are held every year, and this year Kellam High School hosted it. Students from high schools and middle schools throughout the district audition to participate in the honor ensemble.

“It’s nerve-wracking because it’s so competitive,” said junior Nascia Phillips.

Limited spots are available in the honor ensemble. The auditions are blind, which means that the auditionee and the judges cannot see each other. Judges evaluate the player’s ability to perform tasks specific to every kind of instrument, such as their proficiency to sight read.

Judges also give auditionees a random piece to learn in 30 seconds. Auditionees must attempt to recite the piece as best as they can with the limited time.

Official audition results will be announced on Monday, Dec. 10.

“It is such a fun experience because it helps musicians improve their skills,” said junior Nascia Phillips.
