With the leadership of two captains, Justine Singleton and Noah Siraj, Scholastic Bowl won regionals this season and placed third overall in the state.

Scholastic Bowl is a competition in which players compete and answer a wide variety of questions on multiple different subjects.

“I’ve always been sort of interested in trivia, and I thought the Scholastic Bowl team would be a fun experience,” said senior Justine. “After I joined, I got really into it, so I stayed on the team for all four years.”

The team placed fourth in the state last year, and even after placing third this year, they continue to improve and prepare for competitions to come.

“The team performed very well. I’m very proud of how we did,” said Justine. “We did a lot of studying and practicing to be ready for states, and we had a lot of fun there.”

The team consists of mainly lower classmen, which leaves the upperclassmen with the job of helping the younger members. The team only lost two matches during the regular season and went undefeated at regionals.

“I expect the team as a whole to try their hardest to improve by studying throughout the week. I expect sportsmanship and respect to be shown to opposing teams. I expect them to do their best. The team this year did not disappoint; they met all expectations and more,” said coach Brooke Thompson.

Coach Thompson leaves most of the responsibilities on the captains Justine and Noah. They have to decide on the starters and substitutes, run practices, encourage the team, provide feedback, and choose topics for the team to focus on. Topics can vary from ancient history to arts, literature, and mythology.

“Justine and Noah have been fantastic at supporting the team, keeping in touch throughout the week, even the year, outside of our normal season,” said Thompson. “They have been fantastic- truly exceptional. I will deeply miss them both next year.”
