Girls volleyball competed in the Virginia Volleyball Showcase in Richmond, Va.
This is the first time coach Christina Barnhart has taken Ocean Lakes to this tournament, which took place from Aug. 30-31, 2024. Ocean Lakes placed fifth out of the 18 teams that attended.
The girls played against five schools that came from all around Virginia, which included Collegiate High School, Langley High School, North Stafford High School, St. Catherine’s High School and George C. Marshall High School. First Colonial High School also attended; however, they did not play against each other.
“We could have improved our communication on the court,” sophomore Sienna Carr said. “We will continue to work on getting stronger and being more consistent as a team.”
Juniors Santina Marcheva, Carmela Mendoza and senior Kayla Bennett led the team through this tournament, according to Barnhart.
“I’m blessed this year,” Barnhart said. “Every girl that steps on the court plays at a higher level, no matter what grade they’re in.”
The team does not expect to attend any more tournaments this season.
The girls are now 10-3 for this season, which includes the two losses from the tournament.
“Our tournament was strong; we worked through some ups and downs that really prepared us for the rest of the season,” senior Bella Grundy said.
