After the announcement of the double contact rule by the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee on Feb. 20, 2024, the volleyball community was sent into an uproar.
The rule enables players to contact the ball more than once on a team’s second contact when the ball is passed to a teammate. Historically, doubles would occur during the set when there’s too much spin off the setter’s hands or if the setter sets the ball without perfect contact with both hands. But now, if the set is a ugly and displays spin it will be permitted.
“The rule could be beneficial for the sport; however, I do not think the rules should apply when the double occurs when [the ball] is sent over the net. It takes away all the hard work setters make to not make these errors,” said sophomore volleyball player Carmela Mendoza.
As the new rule continues to take a conflicted toll on the volleyball community, the committee felt that this new rule would promote the continuation of play, which would make the game more entertaining for the players and fans, according to the NCAA.
