As the Class of 2026 begins their last year of high school, numerous seniors are starting the process of completing the Common App program for college admissions.
The program assists students to apply to several colleges while operating as a single online platform. Although it is outlined to ease the college application process, for most students it can be time consuming.
“My biggest piece of advice is for students to avoid procrastination.” AP English Literature teacher Thomas Stewart said.
Common App includes countless segments that require essential data. However, the length of each admissions information differs depending on the college and its requirements. As the baseline, students are required to provide personal information, academic history and a personal essay.
“Take your time on the essay — be yourself and share your story.” counselor Danetia Wilkins said.
The process centers around seven core sections needed to be completed by certain deadlines which is why current high school seniors are advised to begin the application process months before submissions are due. Deadlines for early applications typically range from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15, varying from school to school.
“Start early on college apps and essays” AP Literature teacher Jessica Scheible said. “You will have so much more time to refine and revise and perfect all the different parts if you don’t wait until the last minute.”
Common App remains a dominant platform in college admissions, involving rigorous personal essentials and school related materials that are needed in a timely manner. As submission deadlines arrive, seniors continue to research colleges, revise essays and finalize submissions into the system, preparing for the future.
“Be proactive following your junior year and develop a comprehensive college application timeline,” Stewart said.
