During Winter Spirit Week from Dec. 1 to Dec. 5, students chose sides by wearing red or green to support their favorite holiday character on the final day. Red represented the holly jolly Santa Claus, and green was for the infamous Mr. Grinch.
Dec. 5 also aligns with the winter sports assembly, organized to encourage the winter spirit for the sports and academic teams of Ocean Lakes. The reason for red versus green is to encourage school spirit and see who the students favor to win the annual Grinch vs. Santa Claus wrestling match, presented by the OLHS Wrestling Team.
With such a clatter and milk and cookies, the magical Santa Claus arrives for the match, ready for a Christmas beat-down. His opponent is “a mean one” content on stealing Christmas for himself, the extra naughty Mr. Grinch. Students each have a favorite to win the match.
“I like the Grinch because Jim Carey played him in the live action movie,” junior Kyden Lohman said.
As the brawl began, heated throwdowns occurred with Santa and the Grinch taking turns at who could pin the other first. In the end, Santa had gotten distracted by milk and cookies, giving the green fiend a chance to win the match. As Santa left the ring, the Grinch approached the belt, but was met with a new challenger: Mrs. Claus.
“When Mrs. Claus came out, it felt like Santa’s side was getting another chance,” freshman Charlie Strong said. “I did not expect the ending.”
To avenge her husband and save Christmas, Mrs. Claus entered the fight, ready to show him why she is on the cookie jar. With some quick moves and throwdowns, Mrs. Claus successfully pinned the Grinch and won the match, saving Christmas.
“I thought that Mrs. Claus was going to win and not the Grinch,” sophomore Rya Lynn said. “I didn’t expect her to come out.”
