Ocean Lakes held the Virginia Beach Middle School League (VBMSL) Championships in the gymnasium on Jan. 29. 

The girls’ championship was at 5:15 pm with Brandon Middle School (9-0) taking on Great Neck Middle School (8-1). Brandon narrowly defeated Great Neck 47-41. Brandon 8th-grader Jhante Evans was awarded MVP of the game.

Following the girls game, the boys’ championship took place at 7:00 pm. Larkspur Middle School (8-1) took on Kempsville Middle School (8-1), with Larkspur winning 67-55. Larkspur 8th-grader Juan Pilares received MVP.

Close to a 1,000 were in attendance to watch the performances of the boys and girls teams, who finished 1st and 2nd respectively in their division.

“The high octane atmosphere and seeing hundreds of people come to see the middle schoolers play was very fun,” junior George Casher said. “It was good seeing the talent of the next generation on display.”
