After the evident success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in 2023, the stakes for the sequel are high. The first film did well with world-building and nostalgia for fans, and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” manages to capture the same nostalgic feel by taking the story further and staying true to the original Wii game from 2007.
The first film had tons of vibrant colors with the Rainbow Road and Mushroom Kingdom, but “Galaxy” surpasses its predecessor visually. The nebulas, stardust and glowing planets looked even better than the grounded scenery of the first film.
The biggest criticism of the 2023 movie was its thin and fast plot. This time around, the plot felt deeper. It spent more time on characterization, specifically dynamics between each character. This made the narrative feel more resonant rather than just a ton of cameos.
The movie didn’t necessarily copy the game completely, but it featured many details such as the Comet Observator, Rosalina’s story book, the Lumas, the Honey Queen, the Launch Stars and many more smaller things. The music also brought a lot of life to the movie. The pop-song needle drops that cluttered the first film pale in comparison to the grand, orchestral themes based off of the original Wii game.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” featured an A-list cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Initially, the casting was met with criticism, but it was ultimately praised for the actors’ performances.
The sequel features equally high-profile actors. Brie Larson shined as Rosalina, who made the character a kind protector of the stars. It also includes Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., who played him as a troublemaker trying to impress his dad, Donald Glover as Yoshi, who gave an impressive impression of the dinosaur.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” was a triumphant expansion of the franchise. It made $629 million worldwide in its first few weeks, earning $308 million in North America and around $321 million internationally.
