Mount Trashmore hosted a “Zero Waste Wardrobe FreeWear” event where Virginia Beach residents reduced, reused and rewore clothes.
The event happened on April 18, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. With the help of the VB Clean Community Commission (VBCCC) and VBEF between April 13 and 15, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., citizens donated clean, gently used clothes to five drop-off locations, Bayside High school, Kellam High School, Ocean Lakes High School, Tallwood High School and Lynnhaven River NOW.
“I will say that for the VBEF, [the Virginia Beach Education Foundation], this is a logical partnership as we aim to connect students and staff with the broader community and increase volunteerism and fundraising for our schools. Any clothes not claimed at the end of the event are donated to the S.O.S. Thrift Shop which supports the VBEF so it is really a win-win for us,” member of VBEF Bridget Mariano said.
All clothes were welcome except for undergarments, shoes, socks or household items.
“I think it is a pretty good idea, because I don’t wear a lot of my old clothes in my closet. I also am sure that other people would need it,” sophomore Kyle Dong said.
At this event residents were able to donate, trade or participate in a free shopping spree for all ages.
“I need some baggy sweat pants and a sepoy hoodie,” sophomore Rian Desai said. “[Hopefully I can find those at Mount Trashmore this weekend].”
