From baggy jeans and vintage sneakers to claw clips and oversized sweatshirts, students are bringing old styles back in a new way.
Trends from the early 2000s, 1990s, 1980s and even the 1970s are shaping what teenagers wear today, proving that fashion always comes back around.
“A decade I get the most fashion inspiration from would definitely be the 1970s,” sophomore Kai Lovko said. “The use of materials like lace and excessive amounts of flowers are similar to outfit pieces I wear currently.”
Students walking through school can spot throwback styles almost everywhere. Wide-leg jeans, graphic band T-shirts and chunky sneakers–trends popular years ago–have become staples for today’s teens.
Fashion trends often return because younger generations want to recreate styles they see from older siblings, celebrities or even their parents.
“My biggest fashion inspiration would definitely be my mom. She’s been dressing me since I was little, and I get most of my clothes from her closet,” freshman Vechya Ranjit said.
The popularity of thrift shopping has also made retro fashion more accessible. Stores like thrift boutiques and resale apps allow students to find older styles for cheaper prices while creating their own personal look.
“I buy second-hand clothes from thrift stores and online websites like Depop because you can find things there that brands might not make anymore,” senior Colt Walker said. “Not to mention, it is usually cheaper.”
The influence of the early 2000s, often called “Y2K fashion,” has become especially noticeable among high school students. Baby tees, cargo pants, mini shoulder bags and colorful accessories have returned after being popular more than 20 years ago. According to fashion experts, trends tend to repeat every 20 to 30 years as nostalgia grows and old styles feel fresh again.
“One trend that I am happy made a comeback would be capri pants. I also have been loving the 2000s-like funky animal prints that I have been seeing recently,” Vechya said.
Social media influencers and celebrities have played a major role in bringing these trends back. Apps like TikTok allow fashion trends to spread quickly, making vintage-inspired outfits popular almost overnight. Students are no longer just following trends from stores, they are finding inspiration online from creators who mix old and new styles together.
“Social media has a huge impact on my style because when I see someone wearing an outfit or an ad for a specific piece of clothing, I feel more inclined to purchase something like it,” Walker said.
Even hairstyles and accessories from past decades have made a comeback. Claw clips from the 1990s, layered jewelry from the early 2000s and scrunchies from the 1980s can all be spotted in today’s fashion trends. Many students enjoy experimenting with these styles because they allow them to express themselves creatively.
Although trends are constantly circulating, fashion remains a way for students to show personality and confidence. By mixing vintage styles with modern influences, today’s teenagers are proving that old trends never truly disappear, they simply wait for the next generation to bring them back.
“My fashion choices always reflect how I am feeling.” Vechya said “My outfits show my mood through color, patterns and integrating past fashion trends with current ones.”
