Lin-Manuel Miranda’s broadway show “Hamilton” celebrated its 10th anniversary on Aug. 6, marking a decade of cultural influence since its debut at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.
“Hamilton” is a revolutionary hip-hop, R&B, jazz, pop and soul infused musical retelling about the story of Alexander Hamilton, featuring a diverse cast portraying historical figures. It first appeared off-Broadway at The Public Theater on Feb. 17, 2015 and sold out seats to all of its shows.
After this display, the show transferred to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug. 6, 2015, where it then shattered many records with 16 Tony nominations and 11 wins at the 70th Tony Awards.
“Over time I’ve become nostalgic about ‘Hamilton,’” junior Kaylee Klumpp said. “I first watched it in 2020. It was one of the first times I was introduced to musicals, and [it] lit a spark for my love of musicals and theatre in general.”
Hamilton’s 10th Anniversary has sparked its release in cinemas, new trends on social media and a fundraising campaign titled: We Get the Job Done Coalition, a network of organizations helping immigrants.
“I think ‘Hamilton’ is still relevant and has a lot of things that still apply [in modern topics],” said AP U.S. History teacher Darcy Pohl. “It talks a lot about immigrants making their way in the U.S. every year, when I show clips in class, a whole new group becomes interested in it again.”
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical celebrated its anniversary with two performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, along with a special fan performance where Miranda revealed that 335 other Broadway shows have opened and closed since its 2015 premiere.
“Without a doubt ‘Hamilton’ will become among the classics in the next 10-20 years,” sophomore Hayden Dixon said. “It has left such a huge impact on the theatre industry and the world, and it has so much life, story and meaning in its creation.”
