Once a niche designer toy, the Labubu has become one of the most sought-after collectible figures among students, blending cute and creepy aesthetics with a history that traces back more than a decade.
Labubus are vinyl collectible figures created by the artist Kasing Lung and produced by the Hong Kong-based company POP MART.
The figures are known for their oversized ears, fanged grin and mix of whimsical and eerie design elements.
“I love how fluffy they are and it spruces up the decor on my purse,” said sophomore Kai Loveko.
Since their debut in 2015, Labubus have been a part of Lung’s blind box series known as “The Monsters,” growing beyond the art toy community and into mainstream collectible culture.
“I got my first Labubu on Oct. 27, 2025” senior Brady Smith said, “My aunt got one for me and I really liked it, it was cute.”
For many students, Labubus are more than just figures, they’re a personal aesthetic choice or a comfort object.
Some collect them for artwork, others for the thrill of chasing rare editions and some simply enjoy the character’s unusual charm.
“I got it because of their bright colors and mischievous smile,” said sophomore Isabella Smith.
The figures’ varied designs allow collectors to find one that fits their personality, whether it’s a pastel-colored angel version or a dark, Halloween-themed release.
Both Kai and Isabella agree that their favorite version is the “Big into Energy” Labubus.
Social media has amplified the popularity of Labubus, with unboxings, trade videos and restock alerts shaping how students interact with the collectible world.
Some display Labubus as room decor, while others may carry them in their bags.
“To me, a Labubu feels a bit like keeping a tiny piece of mischief and imagination nearby,” said Isabella.
Whether viewed as art, a hobby or simply something cute to look at, Labubus continues to evolve with each new release while giving students a way to express a little bit of their own style in the process.
“If you’re thinking about getting one, go get it, you only live once,” said Brady.
