From franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to the Hunger Games, 2026 looks to be a promising year in the world of cinema. Whether audiences are drawn to dystopian, action or any movie in between, the new year brings something for every film lover.
The Odyssey
Directed by the renowned Christopher Nolan, “The Odyssey” has been highly anticipated for years and is set to release on July 17. It is based on Homer’s Greek epic poem following the post-Trojan War adventures of Odysseus.
While the story has seen numerous adaptations, Nolan’s take is expected to go above and beyond and bring the epic storytelling and intellectual challenge that he has gained a reputation for to the tale of Odysseus.
The film boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya and more.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the fourth installment of his “Spider-Man” series.
His story left off in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” with the world completely forgetting him after one of Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spells went wrong.
While previous parts have explored the multiverse aspect of the MCU, this film is expected to be more grounded and focus on the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” side of Parker.
Though it is not yet clear whether Parker will rekindle his old flame with girlfriend MJ Watson (Zendaya) or best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), both Zendaya and Batalon are confirmed to be returning for the new film.
The “Spider-Man” installments of the MCU are the only ones to pass the $1 billion mark altogether, according to IMDb, so this film is imperative to its revival after fans’ disappointment with recent MCU projects.
Though the first three movies were directed by Jon Watts, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, an up-and-comer whose performance could make or break the future of Peter Parker in the MCU.
The film will hit theaters on July 31.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel and directed by Francis Lawrence, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” will be released on Nov. 20.
The new film is a prequel set 24 years prior to the original trilogy, following a young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada), originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
The novel and its film adaptation have been highly anticipated for years, as “Hunger Games” fans are eager to learn more details about the games that characters such as Abernathy, Finnick Odair and Mags Flanagan rose to stardom in.
“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” features many young up-and-coming stars including Joseph Zada, Mckenna Grace and Whitney Peak and is also supported by familiar faces such as Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes and Kieran Culkin. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are also expected to reprise their respective roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the prologue of the film.
Dune: Part Three
“Dune: Part Three” is the third and final installment of the “Dune” saga. While the previous two installments of the franchise were a two-part film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, “Dune,” the third part will be an adaptation of its sequel, “Dune Messiah.”
This film also has a glamorous cast list, with returning members in Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Florence Pugh, as well as fresh faces in Robert Pattinson and Ida Brooke. “Dune: Part Three” will pick up 12 years after the events of “Dune: Part Two,” and follow Galactic Emperor Paul Atreides (Chalamet) as he takes on war, love and loss and attempts to save humanity from its declining productivity.
The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve and set to release on Dec. 18.
Avengers: Doomsday
In an epic Marvel crossover directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, “Avengers: Doomsday” unites fan favorites like Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) and Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) as they take on Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.).
The initial announcement of this film brought on controversy as it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would rejoin MCU, but not as Tony Stark, his character that launched the MCU franchise in 2008; rather, he is returning as Dr. Doom, the main antagonist in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Though recent MCU projects such as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Eternals” have been majorly disappointing to fans, “Doomsday” is expected to be a turning point in the franchise and recapture the excitement of earlier Avengers films.
With the same release date as “Dune: Part Three,” fans of the franchises have already deemed Dec. 18, “Dunesday” in anticipation.
Ultimately, these highly anticipated films and others including “Wuthering Heights,” “Toy Story 5” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” already have audiences buzzing and expecting 2026 to be a zenith year for movie lovers.
