Bring Your Kid to Work Day, or Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day, is an annual event, and this year, it occurred on April 23, and 12 teachers brought their children to Ocean Lakes High School for a day of enrichment.
“My kids beg to come every year, and it’s a time for them to do something different and not have to go to school for the day,” library media staff member Emily Kilmartin said. “They also love Ocean Lakes; they’ve been coming here since they were little, and they love it here.”
Teachers showed their kids high school culture, but they also were able to show them “the life of a teacher.”
“I think it’s important for them to see my role at Ocean Lakes,” counselor Danetia Wilkins said. “They’ll ask what type of work that I do, so seeing what I do hands on, it shows them I am more than a mom, and I wear many hats.”
The children traveled from classroom to classroom to learn about the different courses offered in high school.
The event was organized by school improvement specialist Dorothy Neal.
“It’s a national event, and the school division administers it,” Dorothy Neal said. “I looked at the previous plan, reached out to the culinary teacher, the librarians and Elisabeth Boys to make [it] happen.”
Throughout the day different activities were set up for the children with crafts in the library, cupcake decoration in room 113 and building candy DNA models in room 216. Biology teacher Elisabeth Boys taught a lesson about genetics and heredity.
“I enjoy having the children of all different ages come and explore the school and get a taste of what happens in high school,” Elisabeth Boys said. “The candy DNA model activity is good for all of these ages and tasty to eat when completed.”
