Over the summer, school nurse Sarah Fridley and other staff helped Ocean Lakes receive the “Project ADAM” designation, a program designed to prevent deaths from cardiac arrest and save students who go into it.
“To earn the designation, we had to create a cardiac emergency response team,” Fridley said. “We worked with Mrs. Filipowicz and other staff to create our team.”
The team consists of the two nurse’s assistants, Dr. Michael King, various gym teachers and the school’s security guards.
“We figured that PE teachers would be good for the team due to their experience with CPR training and teaching to students,” Fridley said.
The team completed a clinic to earn the designation, including various practices of the procedures, drills at school and a discussion of the drill after it was performed.
“Through Project ADAM, schools, sporting programs, and community sites can strengthen their readiness with the equipment, training, and response plans needed to act quickly in those first critical minutes,” the “Project ADAM” website said.
