Riding the tide of last season’s success, Ocean Lakes boys varsity soccer continues to impress in their 2025-2026 season.
However, behind the scenes, this team shares a different vibe. After losing key seniors from last year, the team feels tasked to maintain the culture from previous seasons.
“It means a lot knowing that you’re a part of a group that cares so much and works so hard,” junior Zak Kain-Kuzniewski said. “It is a great honor to put on the kit and is something I will never take for granted.”
With a 8-4-2 record this season, junior Caleb Gonzalez, one of the defensive players, insists that it takes a lot more than a solid work ethic to win, instead it takes team chemistry, one of the key components in team sports that this team must master.
“Communication!” Caleb said.
Clear communication is a music to coaches’ ears and can’t be stressed more on these players.
“I remind them on any given night, we can beat any team in the state,” soccer coach David Wiggins said. “The season is a marathon, not a sprint, and a hiccup here or there will not derail us.”
Although the season is almost over, boys varsity soccer has a journey ahead as they push to punch their ticket into the playoffs.
“They must each win their individual battles on the field, and when in possession, continually ask themselves, ‘how can I help the man with the ball?'” Wiggins said.
