On May 12, varsity baseball bagged a win against their rival Kellam High School after a rough loss to them earlier in the season.
“Securing this win against Kellam was much needed. We played well and couldn’t have asked for a better game,” senior and shortstop Connor Mais said.
In the first inning, Connor was able to get on base through an error from Kellam on his bunt. Shortly after, senior and right-fielder Donovan Nagle hit a double, allowing Connor to score. Senior Greyson Walsh walked, moving Donovan to second base. Senior Brady Nagle then hit a three-run-homerun, building the early lead to 4.
During the top of the second, sophomore Aidan Skalski sat the Knights down, striking out the first three batters.
In the second and third innings, the Dolphins did not manage to score.
The fourth inning is when things started to move. Junior and left-fielder Zach Waterman walked, and shortly after, senior Aidan Benson laid down a bunt to move Zach into scoring position. Senior and third baseman Tre Hamilton hit a single to then bring Zach home, making the score 5-0. While Kellam attempted to get Zach out at home; Tre stole second and third base. After Tre’s at-bat, Donovan hit a home-run, bringing himself and Tre home, making the score 7-0.
“Brady’s home run in the first inning got our momentum going, and my home run in the fourth inning allowed us to cruise through the game to take the win,” Donovan said.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Seinko Augins joined the Nagle twins in hitting home runs during the game. Soon after, Zach hit a single and immediately following, Connor also hit a single which brought Zach home. This now made the score 9-0.
Kellam finally managed to score in the sixth inning on a ground out from Garrett Simon, making the score 9-1. Throughout the second half, Brady managed to hit another home run on the first pitch. Zach managed to walk while freshman second baseman Becket Kulenguski took a hit-by-pitch, moving Zach to second. Finally, Connor hit a double which brought home the winning run, ending the game with a final score of 11-1.
“The game overall was great and a huge win for the team,” Donovan said.
This wasn’t the last time the Dolphins will see the Knights on the field. They will play against each other in the first round of playoffs which start on Wed., May 27, at 5:00 p.m.
