After completing a winless season last winter, the boys basketball team works towards a more successful season in 2025-26.
“I feel like we have a dominant team that has great chemistry and plays well together,” junior and forward Mark Gaines said.
Coaches expect great things as well despite the hardships of past seasons. This season brings along high expectations with players held to a higher standard.
“We have extremely high expectations,” varsity assistant coach Ryan Hess said. “Our program has taken strides in the right direction and we are actively trying to change the culture. Our goal is to be competitive in every game we play and earn a spot in the playoffs.”
The team has worked extremely hard in the offseason through strength training, running and various drills on the court to sharpen their game and stay prepared to play.
“Offseason workouts were very productive, and I think their absence last year was a big part of the issues we had during the season,” junior and team captain Zak Kain-Kuzniewski said. “This year, we are a lot more conditioned, stronger and feel like a true team for the first time.”
So far, the offseason work has paid off.
The Dolphins began this year’s campaign with a successful scrimmage against Cape Henry, winning three of the six quarters of play. Individually, players have focused on certain aspects of the game that were exposed by opponents last year and they hope to sharpen their skills and prevent the repetitive losses of last year.
“Since last year, I’ve really worked on my jumper and defense, and I think that will be helpful to the team for sure,” Mark said.
The team has been competitive so far, with close losses at Grassfield (67-55) and First Colonial (50-43) on Dec. 3 and Dec. 5, respectively. Their next game is on Dec. 10 against undefeated Great Bridge.
“We have an amazing group of young men who have a desire to compete, get better everyday and be part of the change at Ocean Lakes,” Hess said. “We need support from the Ocean Lakes Dolphin family to come out and show love for all home and away games this winter season.”
