To commemorate the American minister and activist Martin Luther King Jr., Green Run High School hosted the 17th annual African Male Summit. This year’s theme was “Everyone Can Be Great.”
¨This empowering event is focused on inspiring and uplifting young African American males through meaningful discussions, mentorship and networking opportunities,¨ Green Run High School student athletics coordinator Kelley Rummel said.
The Summit took place on Jan. 25, 2025, and was offered to students from grades six to 12 to promote academic excellence, team building and leadership development. This program also provides parents opportunities to learn division initiatives and community resources.
Students were given the opportunity to meet with historically black colleges, such as Norfolk State University and Elizabeth City State University.
“This year, I was one of the five leaders picked to lead a group of kids,” junior Jamarie Sanders said. “The summit gave us time to learn about all of our future careers.”
Over 600 students attended the summit seeking knowledge from their peers and community.
“The summit taught me about black society and different aspects of life,” sophomore Remi Lynch said.
Leadership was a big motive for the summit students were guided through the gym as they explored options for their college careers.
“I just wanted to be a great role model showing them how to lead by example, connecting with everybody and leaving nobody out,” Jamarie said.
